The occasion gap: dressing well is harder than it should be
There is a particular kind of cognitive overhead that attaches itself to getting dressed for a specific occasion. A dinner reservation at somewhere you have not been. A friend's wedding in a city you do not know well. A presentation at a company whose culture you can only infer. The uncertainty is not whether you own the right clothes, but whether the clothes you own are the right clothes for this, and that question is harder than it appears.
Dress codes are the obvious part of the problem. Black tie means something specific. Business casual means almost nothing. Smart casual is a phrase invented to make people anxious. But beneath the dress code sits a stack of additional variables: formality register, cultural context, seasonal appropriateness, weather, time of day, who else will be there, and what you want to communicate. Most people resolve this stack imperfectly and under time pressure, and the outcome is a familiar one: either overdressing and feeling conspicuous, or underdressing and feeling underprepared.
The problem is not a lack of clothes. Most people who feel this anxiety have more than enough in their wardrobe. The problem is a lack of a reliable mapping between what they own and what a given context calls for. That mapping is what a personal stylist provides, not more clothes, but better contextual judgement applied to the clothes that already exist.
Personal stylists are expensive and not scalable. Style advice on the internet is generic and context-free. Algorithms that recommend new purchases are solving for commerce, not for the specific event on your calendar next Saturday. None of these options close the occasion gap at the moment it opens.
